Test G: Passive Anti-Theft System Received Incorrect Key - Code From Transponder

NOTE: Large metallic objects, a second Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition key, or devices such as electronic credit cards on the same key ring may cause vehicle starting problem and possibly set this code. Ensure customer's encoded ignition key is an approved Ford encoded ignition key. Encoded keys from Rotunda, Ilco, Curtis and Strattec are also approved keys.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - MUSTANG article. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1601 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. Check all existing encoded ignition keys with instrument cluster self-test to verify all other encoded ignition keys are programmed. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  2. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor instrument cluster Parameter Identification Data (PID) NUMKEYS. If PID NUMKEYS does not indicate 8, go to next step. If PID NUMKEYS indicates 8, erase and reprogram key codes. See KEY PROGRAMMING - ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  3. Verify there are at least 2 currently programmed encoded ignition keys available with vehicle. If 2 currently programmed encoded ignition keys are available with vehicle, go to next step. If 2 currently programmed encoded ignition keys are not available with vehicle, obtain 2 NEW encoded ignition keys. Program NEW encoded ignition keys. See KEY PROGRAMMING - ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. After new encoded ignition keys are programmed, go to next step.
  4. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor instrument cluster PID SPARE_KY. If PID indicates ENABLE, perform KEY PROGRAMMING - ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING, then go to next step. If PID does not indicate ENABLE, perform KEY PROGRAMMING - SPARE KEY PROGRAMMING SWITCH  under PROGRAMMING, then go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using first encoded ignition key, start vehicle. Using second encoded ignition key, start vehicle. If both encoded ignition keys do not start vehicle, go to next step. If both encoded ignition keys start vehicle, system is okay at this time. If there is a need to program additional encoded ignition keys, perform KEY PROGRAMMING - USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
  6. Using WDS or NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear continuous DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test using both encoded ignition keys. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - MUSTANG article. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacing instrument cluster, perform TEST J: SECURITY IDENTIFICATION DOES NOT MATCH BETWEEN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER & POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE . If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
