Test D: Invalid Key Code Format From Ignition Key Transponder (DTC B1602)

NOTE: PCM disables engine for 20 seconds every time DTC B1601 is set. Ignition switch must remain in RUN position for at least 20 seconds before attempting to start vehicle. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, check PCM PID ANTISCAN for unprogrammed key time-out status.

NOTE: Large metallic objects, a second PATS ignition key, or devices such as electronic credit cards on the same key ring may cause vehicle starting problem and possibly set this code. Ensure customers encoded ignition key is an approved Ford encoded ignition key. Encoded keys from Rotunda, Ilco, Valeo and Strattec are also approved keys.

NOTE: The encoded ignition keys must be approved Ford encoded PATS ignition keys. Unapproved PATS keys do not always operate correctly over different temperature ranges. Encoded ignition keys from Rotunda, Ilco, Curtis, C.E. Marshall or Strattec are approved encoded ignition keys.

Turn ignition off. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If DTC B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. Check all customer encoded ignition keys, by attempting to start vehicle with each key, to verify all other encoded ignition keys are programmed.
Turn ignition off. Cut a NEW encoded ignition key and insert into ignition lock cylinder. Using NEW key, turn ignition switch to RUN position. Program NEW encoded ignition key. See PROGRAMMING WITHOUT USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS under PROGRAMMING. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform PCM self-test and retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If DTC B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. Check all customer encoded ignition keys by, attempting to start vehicle with each key, to verify all other encoded ignition keys are programmed.
Turn ignition off. Install a new PATS transceiver. See PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM TRANSCEIVER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform PCM self-test and retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITION table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. Check all customer encoded ignition keys by attempting to start vehicle with each key, to verify all other encoded ignition keys are programmed.
