Test C: Incorrect Key Code From Ignition Key Transponder (DTC B1601)

NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, PCM must be reprogrammed and all ignition keys MUST be programmed into PCM.

NOTE: The encoded ignition keys must be approved Ford encoded PATS ignition keys. Unapproved PATS keys do not always operate correctly over different temperature ranges. Encoded ignition keys from Rotunda, Ilco, Curtis, C.E. Marshall or Strattec are approved encoded ignition keys.

NOTE: PCM disables engine for 20 seconds every time DTC B1601 is set. Ignition switch must remain in RUN position for at least 20 seconds before attempting to start vehicle. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, check PCM PID ANTISCAN for unprogrammed key time-out status.

Connect NGS tester to DLC. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform PCM self-test and retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. Check all customer encoded ignition keys by attempting to start vehicle with each key, to verify all other encoded ignition keys are programmed. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITION table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
Verify there are at least 2 currently programmed encoded ignition keys available with vehicle. If 2 currently programmed encoded ignition keys are available, go to next step. If no keys are currently programmed encoded ignition keys are available, cut a NEW encoded ignition key. Program NEW ignition key. See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS under PROGRAMMING
Using NGS tester, monitor PCM PID SPARE_KEY. If PID indicates YES, reprogram key that is causing concern. See PROGRAMMING USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS . If PID does not indicate YES, perform SPARE KEY PROGRAMMING SWITCH and reprogram key that is causing concern. Clear DTCs and repeat PCM self-test.
