Sun Gear Shell Assembly: Reassembly
- Ensure all clutch assemblies have been checked and overhauled as necessary before reassembling shell assembly. Position assembly on bench with intermediate clutch facing downward. Ensure thrust washer No. 7 tabs are aligned with slots in direct/intermediate clutch.
- Install one-way clutch on direct clutch, with clutch lip facing down and lip on outer race facing up. Outer race should turn clockwise and lock counterclockwise when direct clutch is facing up. See Fig 1
. Install one-way clutch and align onto clutch pack splines. Install forward clutch feed "O" rings on hub.
- Lubricate "O" rings and install forward clutch assembly, being careful not to damage "O" rings. Install thrust washer No. 6 on forward clutch assembly. See Figure
. Ensure one-way clutch is positioned in overdrive drum assembly. One-way clutch should turn counterclockwise. See Fig 2
. Position overdrive drum assembly over forward clutch.
- Rotate overdrive drum assembly to engage forward clutch splines. Turn assembly over and set on overdrive drum assembly. Install thrust bearing No. 10 onto intermediate clutch hub. Use petroleum jelly to hold bearing in position.
- Install intermediate clutch hub into intermediate clutch pack. Rotate intermediate clutch hub to fully seat into intermediate clutch pack. Install thrust bearing No. 11 on intermediate clutch hub with outer lip facing down. Install sun gear and shell assembly over intermediate clutch assembly. Ensure outside tabs of sun gear shell align with overdrive drum assembly.
