Test C: Front Wipers Do Not Operate Correctly

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is on instrument panel below steering column. Retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform On-Demand Self-Test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1438 and B1450 are retrieved together, go to TEST A: FRONT WIPERS INOPERATIVE  . If DTCs B1438 or B1450 are retrieved, go to step  3 . If DTCs B1434, B1436, B1446, B1448 and B1466 are retrieved, go to step  6 . If DTCs are not recorded go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester observe GEM PID WPMODE while turning wiper/washer switch through all positions. If PID values agree with wiper/washer switch positions, go to step  6 . If PID values do not agree with wiper switch positions, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect multifunction switch harness connector C202a. Disconnect wiper/washer portion of multifunction switch harness connector C202b. See Figure . Test wiper/washer switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If wiper/washer switch tests okay, go to next step. If wiper/washer switch does not test okay, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest.
  4. NOTE: Pink/Yellow wire runs between GEM and terminal No. 1 at wiper/washer switch harness connector C202b. Light Blue/Orange wire runs between GEM and terminal No. 2 at wiper run/park relay socket.

  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C201b. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Pink/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C201b. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 15 (Light Blue/Orange wire) at GEM harness connector C201b. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire. If voltage is not present, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between terminal No. 4 at GEM harness connector C201b and terminal No. 1 at multifunction switch harness connector C202b. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  23 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Pink/Yellow wire.
  7. Rotate wiper/washer switch to high speed position. If wipers operate at high speed, go to step  16 . If wipers do not operate at high speed, go to next step.
  8. Using NGS tester observe GEM PID WPMODE while turning wiper/washer switch to high speed position. If GEM PID WPHISP indicates SHORTVBAT, go to step  11 . If GEM PID WPHISP does not indicate SHORTVBAT, go to next step.
  9. Using NGS tester select GEM active command WIPER_RLY. Trigger WIPER_RLY and SPEED_RLYON. If wipers operate at high speed, go to step  23 . If wipers do not operate at high speed, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Test wiper high/low relay. See RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTING. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is not okay, replace wiper high/low relay. Clear DTCs and retest.
  11. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire. White/Black wire runs between wiper high/low relay, splice S139, and terminal No. 21 at central junction box harness connector C270a. See Figure . See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  12. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  13 .
  13. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C201a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay socket and terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector C201a. If voltage does not exist, go to step  23 .
  14. Measure resistance in Gray/Light Blue wire between terminal No. 2 at wiper high/low relay socket and terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector C201a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Light Blue wire.
  15. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at wiper high/low relay socket. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire between high/low relay socket and terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector C201a.
  16. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Orange wire between terminal No. 5 at wiper high/low relay socket and terminal No. 1 at wiper motor harness connector C125. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  22 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Orange wire.
  17. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Test high/low relay. See RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTING. If relay is okay, go to next step. If relay is not okay, replace wiper high/low relay. Clear DTCs and retest.
  18. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C125. Measure resistance in White wire between terminal No. 4 at wiper high/low relay socket and terminal No. 2 at wiper motor harness connector C125. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in White wire.
  19. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at wiper motor harness connector C125. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire. White/Black wire runs between wiper motor, splice S139, and terminal No. 21 at central junction box harness connector C270a. See Figure . See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  20. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance in Dark Green wire between terminal No. 4 at wiper park/run relay socket and terminal No. 5 at wiper motor harness connector C125. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green wire. Dark Green wire runs between wiper park/run relay socket, splice S122, and wiper motor. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  21. Disconnect Central Junction Box (CJB) harness connector C270a. Measure resistance in Dark Green wire between terminal No. 5 at wiper motor harness connector C125 and terminal No. 2 at CJB harness connector C270a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green wire. Dark Green wire runs between wiper motor, splice S122, and central junction box. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  22. Measure resistance in Dark Green wire between terminal No. 2 at CJB harness connector C270a and terminal No. 15 at GEM socket C201d. See Fig 2 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Green wire.
  23. Test wiper motor operation. See WIPER MOTOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. If wiper motor is okay, go to next step. If wiper motor is not okay, replace wiper motor. See FRONT WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  24. Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Check for any corrosion, pushed out pins or any other damage. Reconnect all GEM harness connectors. If problem still exists, replace GEM. See GEM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If problem no longer exists, system is okay at this time.
