Test E: Power Seat Does Not Move Horizontal/Vertical
CAUTION:
Side air bag system must be deactivated for diagnosis of power seat (if equipped). See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Air Bag Simulator (418-F088) must be installed under seats to floor connector, and removed before operating vehicle.
NOTE:
Before beginning this test, ensure seat and seat track are free from all obstructions. Test applies to passenger's seat and driver's seat without memory. For driver's seat with memory, perform TEST G: MEMORY SEAT INOPERATIVE
. For connector identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
.
- Deactivate air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Turn ignition off. Operate inoperative seat in forward and rearward directions. If seat moves horizontally, go to next step. If seat does not move horizontally, go to step 9 .
- Operate inoperative seat in both tilting directions. If rear height motor does not operate, go to next step. If front height motor does not operate, go to step 6 . If both front and rear height motors do not operate, replace seat control switch.
- Disconnect inoperative seat motor assembly harness connector. Measure voltage between Yellow/Light Green and Red/Light Green wires at seat motor assembly harness connector. Operate switch in rear up and rear down directions, while observing voltmeter. If voltage does not change from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage changes from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, check seat track for smooth operation. If seat track is okay, replace rear height motor. If seat track is not okay, replace seat track. See POWER SEAT TRACK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect suspect seat control switch harness connector. Measure resistance of Red/Light Green wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/Light Green wire.
- Measure resistance of Yellow/Light Green wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace seat control switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Light Green wire.
- Disconnect inoperative seat motor assembly harness connector. If driver's seat is inoperative, measure voltage between Red/Light Blue and Yellow/Light Blue wires at seat motor assembly harness connector. If passenger's seat is inoperative, measure voltage between Yellow/White and Red/White wires at seat motor assembly harness connector. On all applications, operate switch in front up and front down directions, while observing voltmeter. If voltage does not change from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage changes from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, check seat track for smooth operation. If seat track is okay, replace front height motor. If seat track is not okay, replace seat track. See POWER SEAT TRACK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect suspect seat control switch harness connector. If driver's seat is inoperative, measure resistance of Yellow/Light Blue wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. If passenger's seat is inoperative, measure resistance of Red/White wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. On all applications, if resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Light Blue wire or Red/White wire.
- If driver's seat is inoperative, measure resistance of Red/Light Blue wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. If passenger's seat is inoperative, measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. On all applications, if resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace seat control switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Blue wire or Yellow/White wire.
- Disconnect inoperative seat motor assembly harness connector. If driver's seat is inoperative, measure voltage between Yellow/White and Red/White wires at seat motor assembly harness connector. If passenger's seat is inoperative, measure voltage between Red/Light Blue and Yellow/White Blue wires at seat motor assembly harness connector. On all applications, operate switch in front up and front down directions, while observing voltmeter. If voltage does not change from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage changes from less than -10 volts to more than 10 volts, check seat track for smooth operation. If seat track is okay, replace horizontal motor. If seat track is not okay, replace seat track. See POWER SEAT TRACK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
