Test D: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Charging

  1. Check "I" Circuit (Light Green/Red Wire) For A Short To Ground

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check warning indicator. Is the warning indicator illuminated? If yes, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Test system for normal operation. If no, for 3.0L engine and 4.0L engine, go to next step. For 2.3L engine, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test system for normal operation.

  2. Check "S" Circuit (White/Black Wire) Integrity

    Turn ignition off. Connect generator 3-pin connector. Start engine and let idle. Using DVOM, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and generator 1-pin connector terminal "S" (White/Black wire). See Figure. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. Is the voltage approximately 6-8 volts? If yes, install a new voltage regulator. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test the system for normal operation. If no, install a new generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test the system for normal operation.
