Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

A driver-side air bag module fault can be caused by faulty wiring, terminals, or connectors, faulty driver-side air bag module or faulty air bag diagnostic monitor.

  1. Verify condition

    Place air bag system in diagnostic mode and check for Code 2. See DIAGNOSIS MODE & RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If AIR BAG warning light flashes Code 2, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not flash Code 2, inspect air bag system wiring harness, connectors, spices and crimps for intermittent faults.
  2. Check driver-side air bag module

    Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system fault codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Place air bag system in diagnostic mode and check for Code 2. If AIR BAG warning light flashes Code 2, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not flash Code 2, replace driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect and activate system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear air bag system fault codes. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  under .
  3. Check driver-side air bag module circuit

    Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 3 minutes for back-up power air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete back-up power supply. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor connector C2003A. See DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure the resistance between diagnostic monitor connector terminals No. 6 (White wire, circuit No. PS03) and No. 5 (White or Blue wire, circuit No. PS04). See Figure. If resistance is about 3 ohms, replace air bag diagnostic monitor. Reconnect and activate system. Clear air bag system fault codes. Perform system operation check. If resistance is not about 3 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Check circuit resistance between diagnostic monitor & clockspring

    Disconnect clockspring 4-pin connector C2013 at base of steering column. Measure resistance between diagnostic monitor connector terminal No. 6 and harness side of clockspring connector C2013 (White wire). Measure resistance between diagnostic monitor connector terminal No. 5 and harness side of clockspring connector C2013 (White or Blue wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms at each terminal, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect and activate system. Clear air bag system fault codes. Perform system operation check. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Check resistance on diagnostic monitor

    Measure resistance between ground and air bag diagnostic monitor connector C2003A, terminals No. 6 (White wire) and No. 5 (White or Blue wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, check all connection and locking tabs for possible intermittent faults. Reconnect and activate system. Clear air bag system fault codes. Perform system operation check. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short in White and/or Blue wires. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Reconnect and activate system. Clear air bag system fault codes. Perform system operation check.
