ISSUE

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0460 (stuck fuel level condition) may be stored in continuous memory without a malfunction of the fuel level sensor. Also, depending on the location of the fuel tank pressure transducer, there is a possibility for DTCs P0442 or P0455 to be present in combination with the P0460. This may be caused by insufficient time allowed for the vehicle to consume fuel after the tank is filled/overfilled, before float movement can be properly monitored. As a result, the P0460 test can detect no float movement (stuck fuel level condition) because of the over-full tank condition. When this happens, the default EVAP strategy allows checking of the evaporative system, and may set the companion P0442/P0455.

ACTION

Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to the following SERVICE PROCEDURE for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. If symptom is present with DTC P0460, refer to the pinpoint tests in the 1999 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
  2. If there is no symptom present with DTC P0460, check to be sure the vehicle has the latest calibration and reprogram PCM to the latest calibration.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. See Fig 1 . Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
