Test A: Windshield Washer Inoperative

  1. Inspect fuses, connections, and wiring. If all are okay, go to next step. Repair any obvious defects.
  2. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, next to steering column. Following NGS tester manufacturer's instructions, retrieve continuous DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST. If no DTCs exist, go to step 4). If DTCs exist, perform the following:
    • If DTC B1450 exists, go to next step.
    • If DTC B1456 exists, repair Black/White wire between GEM and washer pump relay.
    • If DTC B1460 exists, repair Tan/Red wire between GEM and washer pump relay. Clear codes and rerun ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST. If DTC still exists, go to step 13).
    • If DTC B1431, B1434, B1458, B1446, B1476 or B1473 exists, go to step 7).
  3. Disconnect wiper switch. Using NGS tester, access WASH-SW from PID/DATA monitor menu. Ground Light Blue/Orange wire at switch harness connector. If NGS tester indicates switch is on, go to next step. If tester does not indicate switch is on, repair Light Blue/Orange wire between switch and GEM.
  4. Turn ignition on. Operate wiper switch to exercise each wiper/washer function. If switch operation is okay, go to next step. If switch fails to operate properly, repair Pink/Yellow wire between switch and GEM.
  5. Inspect for short to ground on Pink/Yellow wire between switch and GEM. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  6. Test for battery voltage on White/Black wire at washer pump relay located at right front of engine compartment. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair White/Black wire to washer pump relay. See WIRING DIAGRAM  .
  7. Disconnect washer pump. Run wiper control functional test with NGS tester. Energize washer pump relay. Test for battery voltage on Black/White wire at washer pump connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair Black/White wire between washer pump relay and washer pump.
  8. Disconnect washer pump relay. Check Black/White wire for continuity between washer pump relay and washer pump. If continuity does not exist, replace washer pump relay, then go to next step. If continuity exists, repair open in Black/White wire, then retest system.
  9. Inspect Black wire for open between washer pump and ground. Repair ground wire as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  10. Inspect Black/Light Green wire from fuse panel for short to ground. If wire is okay, go to next step. Repair Black/Light Green wire as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAM  .
  11. Inspect Black/White wire between washer pump relay and washer pump for short to ground. Repair Black/White wire as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
  12. With ignition off, unplug 26-pin GEM connector. Test harness connector pin No. 24 (Tan/Red wire) for battery voltage. If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage on Tan/Red wire, then go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace washer pump relay.
  13. Reconnect negative battery terminal. Connect NGS tester. Run wiper control functional test with NGS tester. Energize washer pump relay. If washer pump works, no problem is detected at this time. Inspect wiring harness and connectors for intermittent contact. If washer pump does not work, replace washer pump.
