Pinpoint Test G - Coil Test

  1. Check Coil Voltage  Turn ignition on. Using Rotunda Distributor System Tester (007-00075), measure voltage between COIL and IGN GND jacks. If voltage is 10-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10-14 volts, go to step 4).
  2. Check For Short To Power  Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil. Measure resistance between COIL and ICM PWR jacks. If resistance is less than 2000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2000 ohms or more, go to step 8).
  3. Check Wiring Harness  Disconnect Ignition Control Module (ICM). Measure resistance between COIL and ICM PWR jacks. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, locate and repair short to power in wiring harness and retest. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, replace ICM and retest.
  4. Check Power To Coil  Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between COIL and IGN GND jacks. If voltage is 10-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10-14 volts, locate and repair open in power-to-coil circuit and retest.
  5. Check For Short To Ground  Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between COIL and IGN GND jacks. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, go to step 7).
  6. Check Wiring Harness  Measure resistance between COIL jack and Tan/Yellow wire at ignition coil wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace coil and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open circuit in Tan/Yellow wire and retest.
  7. Check For Short To Ground  Turn ignition off. Disconnect ICM. Measure resistance between COIL and IGN GND jacks. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace ICM and retest. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground and retest.
  8. Test Coil  Reconnect ignition coil. Turn ignition on. Press RESET button. Tester should perform a coil test after it resets. If COIL FAULT MEMORY LED is on, replace coil and retest. If COIL FAULT MEMORY LED is off, go to next step.
  9. Wiggle Test: Mode "B"  Set WIGGLE TEST switch on. Set MODE switch to "B". Press RESET button and wait for initialization. Wiggle and bend ignition coil wiring harness, a small section at a time, working from coil toward ICM. If fault is indicated (any memory LEDs on), isolate fault in harness and repair as necessary. Press RESET button and retest. If no fault is indicated, go to next step.
  10. Wiggle Test: Coil Disconnected  Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil. Turn ignition on. Press RESET button and wait for initialization. Wiggle and bend ignition coil wiring harness, a small section at a time, working from coil connector toward ICM. If fault is indicated (any memory LEDs on), isolate fault in harness and repair as necessary. Press RESET button and retest. If no fault is indicated, replace ICM and retest.
