ISSUE

Some DTCs for intermittent air bag system problems (DTCs 61 through 85) may not automatically flash on the air bag indicator and may require retrieval. If an air bag DTC has been reported on a vehicle by a customer but is not currently flashing this may be due to one of two reasons:

A charging system concern has been identified by the diagnostic monitor and a DTC 12 indicated. DTC 12 will not be stored in memory under these conditions. Correction of the charging system concern will eliminate the DTC OR
An intermittent fault has occurred and the fault is no longer present. The diagnostic monitor may be programmed to not flash "intermittent" DTCs 61 through 85 that are stored in memory.

ACTION

A programming change has been made to the air bag diagnostic monitor (14B215) affecting 1995 Integrated Air Bag Diagnostics Module 4 (IABDM4) systems. Refer to the following procedures for service details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

For 1995 vehicles built after June 1994 (Windstars built after September 1994), Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) 61 through 85 will not normally be displayed. The following supplemental procedures must be used to display the stored DTCs.

Locate the air bag diagnostic service connector containing Circuit 631 (T/R). This is a gray connector above the accelerator pedal in Windstar and under the glove box or near the diagnostic monitor in other vehicles.
With the ignition key OFF short Circuit 631 to the ground contained in the service connector or another known good ground.
Turn the ignition key to RUN and observe the air bag indicator prove-out (six (6) seconds).
Within two (2) seconds after the air bag indicator goes out, remove the short on circuit 631 (T/R).
Stored DTCs will be displayed if present. After repairs are made, Steps 1 through 4 should be repeated and the DTCs should be cleared using the DTC Clearing Procedure.

AIR BAG DTC CLEARING PROCEDURE REVIEW

Follow the diagnostic procedures (located in Section 01-20B of the appropriate Service Manual) to repair the fault condition flashing on the air bag indicator.
Cycle the ignition key to OFF and then to RUN using the DTCs Retrieval Procedure as shown previously if necessary).
Observe air bag indicator prove-out (six (6) seconds) followed by DTC(s) 52-85 flashing completely one (1) time.
Locate the diagnostic service connector containing Circuits 631 (T/R) and 57 (BK).
Use a jumper wire to short Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK) or to another known good ground.
Hold short until diagnostic monitor tone sounds (approximately five (5) seconds).
Release short on Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 5 (BK).
The original DTC is now cleared. The next highest priority fault code stored in memory (if one exists) will begin flashing. Repeat if necessary.
