DESCRIPTION

TRANSMISSION - AODE/4R70W MAIN CONTROL AND CASE USAGE FOR PRIOR MODELS - SERVICE TIP

ISSUE

A new transmission case and main control have been released for service on 1992-95 AODE/4R70W transmissions.

ACTION

When servicing a 1992-95 transmission case with a new service part case and/or new main control (refer to the MAIN CONTROL APPLICATION TABLE), pilot sleeves or new bolts must be installed to accommodate the new service parts. Refer to the following text for details.

The new transmission case pilot holes (used to align the main control) have been reduced to accommodate the smaller pilot bolts used in the new service main control.

When servicing a 1992-95 transmission case with a new 1997 case (see CASE APPLICATION TABLE) and reusing the original main control, the pilot bolts must be replaced with Bolts (N808962-S) and Gasket (F7AZ-7C155-AA).

The large tipped pilot bolts should be used to assemble the main control since it aligns the separating plate and valve body gasket. After the main control is assembled, remove and replace the pilot bolts with the new bolts. The reinforcing plate and separating plate bolts will keep the components in alignment. Refer to Fig 1 .

When replacing the main control with the a new level part (refer to MAIN CONTROL APPLICATION TABLE) and reusing the original case, Sleeves (F6AZ-7K720-A) must be installed into the main control pilot holes and an Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid Retainer (F6AZ-7H111-A) must also be used. An instruction sheet is included with the new main control.

NOTE: Follow all normal service procedures (i.e., bolt torques) as outlined in the appropriate model/year service manual, section 07-01.

If both the main control and case are being replaced, no action is necessary.
