Pinpoint Test D: Code 45/215 Or 46/216
- Check For Spark Using a spark tester, check for spark at all spark plug wires while cranking. If spark is consistent on all spark plug wires, ignition system is okay. If spark is not consistent, go to step 2).
- Check Spark Plugs & Wires Check spark plug wires for insulation damage, looseness and shorts. Remove and check spark plugs for damage, wear, carbon deposits and incorrect plug gap. If spark plugs and wires are okay, reinstall plugs and wires, and go to step 3). If spark plugs and wires are defective, repair or replace components as necessary.
- Check For VBAT At Coil Turn ignition off. Connect EDIS diagnostic cable to breakout box. Connect negative lead to battery. Set EDIS diagnostic cable box switch to 4/6 CYLINDER position. Install right (Blue) coil tee. Use EDIS "4" overlay on breakout box. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J5 (VBAT) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step 4). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in VBAT circuit.
- Check C1 Voltage At Coil Pack With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J3 (C1C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 12).
- Check C2 Voltage At Coil Pack With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J6 (C2C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 6). If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 14).
- Check C1 Voltage At EDIS Module Turn ignition off. Connect EDIS diagnostic cable tee to EDIS module and vehicle harness connector. With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J53 (RC1C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 7). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in C1 circuit.
- Check C2 Voltage At EDIS Module With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J55 (RC2E) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 8). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in C2 circuit.
- Check C1 Voltage At Coil Connector Turn ignition off. Disconnect coil from EDIS diagnostic cable coil tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable tee connected to vehicle harness coil connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between J3 (C1C) and J7 (BAT-) at 6breakout box. If DC voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 9). If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, go to step 16).
- Check C2 Voltage At Coil Connector With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J6 (C2C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If DC voltage reading is less than 0.5 volt, go to step 10). If voltage is 0.5 volt or greater, go to step 17).
- Check C1 At Coil Connector While Cranking Engine Connect test light between J1 (BAT+) and J3 (C1C). Connect positive lead of diagnostic cable to battery. Crank engine and observe test light. If test light blinks consistently, go to step 11). If test light does not blink consistently, repair open in C1 circuit to EDIS module.
- Check C2 At Coil Connector While Cranking Engine Connect test light between J1 (BAT+) and J6 (C2C). Crank engine and observe test light. If test light blinks consistently, input to coil pack is okay but high voltage output does not exist. Replace coil pack. If test light does not blink consistently, C2 circuit is open internally. Replace EDIS module.
- Check C1 For Short To Ground Turn ignition off. Set DVOM on 20-k/ohm scale. Disconnect coil from coil tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness coil connector. Measure resistance between J7 (BAT-) and J3 (RC1C) at breakout box. If resistance is less than 2000 ohms, C1 circuit is open in coil. Replace 6right coil pack. If resistance is 2000 ohms or greater, go to step 13).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Measure resistance between J7 (BAT-) and J3 (RC1C) at breakout box. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, C1 is shorted internally. Replace EDIS module. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground in C1 circuit.
- Check C2 For Short To Ground (Coil Disconnected) Turn ignition off. Disconnect coil from coil tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness coil connector. Measure resistance between J7 (BAT-) and J6 (RC2C) at breakout box. If resistance is greater than 2000 ohms, C2 is open internally. Replace coil pack. If resistance is 2000 ohms or less, go to step 15).
- Check C2 For Short To Ground (Coil & EDIS Module Disconnected) Turn ignition off. Disconnect EDIS module from vehicle harness. Measure resistance between J6 (RC2C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, replace EDIS module. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to power in C2 circuit.
- Check C1 For Short To Power Turn ignition off. Disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM to 20-volt DC scale. With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J3 (C1C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If DC voltage is less than 0.5 volt, C1 is shorted internally. Replace EDIS module. If voltage is 0.5 volt or greater, repair C1 short to power in vehicle wiring harness.
- Check C2 For Short To Power Turn ignition off. Disconnect EDIS module from vehicle harness. With ignition on and engine off, measure voltage between J6 (C2C) and J7 (BAT-) at breakout box. If DC voltage is less than 0.5 volt, C2 is shorted to power internally. Replace EDIS module. If voltage is 0.5 volt or greater, repair short to power in C2 circuit.
