Stator Testing

  1. Visually inspect stator. If windings appear charred, burned, or if insulation is missing and bare copper is noticed, stator must be replaced.
  2. Using a DVOM set to lowest scale, check for grounds between stator lamination and each of the 3 stator terminals. If continuity is present, stator must be replaced.
  3. Using a DVOM set to lowest scale, check stator phase resistance across stator terminals. See Fig 1. If resistance is about the same for each of the 3 phases, stator is okay and may be reused.
