Inspection Procedure 42 - Fuel Pump Drive Control Circuit

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector at fuel pump relay. Fuel pump relay is located on passenger's side of center console, just in front of emergency brake lever. See Figure .
  2. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminals No. 3 (Black/White wire) and No. 4 (Black/White wire) at wiring harness side of connector for fuel pump relay. Go to next step.
  3. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 7). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Check for defective terminals or connections at connector for ignition switch. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, go to next step.
  5. Check for a trouble symptom. For specific symptoms, see the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If no trouble symptom exists, go to next step.
  6. Check wiring harness between fuel pump relay and connector at ignition switch. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, check ignition switch.
  7. Reinstall connector on fuel pump relay. Ensure ignition off. Access connectors on ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console. Disconnect the 26-pin ECM connector B-53 from ECM.
  8. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 8 (White/Red wire) on 26-pin ECM connector B-53. Battery voltage should exist.
  9. If battery voltage exists, go to step 13). If battery voltage does not exist, check for defective terminals or connections at connector on fuel pump relay.
  10. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION 
  11. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and fuel pump relay. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness.
  12. Check for defective terminals or connections at 26-pin ECM connector B-53. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If no trouble symptom exists, replace ECM.
