DTC Test No. 3 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor

NOTE: Intake air temperature sensor is incorporated into the volume airflow sensor. For Engine Control Module (ECM) connector terminal identification, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Possible causes for DTC are: defective intake air temperature sensor, loose connector, open or shorted intake air temperature sensor wiring circuit or defective ECM.
  1. Check intake air temperature sensor. See procedures in the SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. If intake air temperature sensor is okay, go to next step. If intake air temperature sensor is defective, replace volume airflow sensor.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from volume airflow sensor. Volume airflow sensor is located on passenger's side of engine compartment, near air cleaner.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Red/Blue wire) on wiring harness side of connector.
  4. Voltage should be 4.5-4.9 volts. Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 5 (Black wire) on wiring harness side of connector. Continuity should exist. If voltage is within specification and continuity exists, go to step 7). If voltage is not within specification or continuity does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Check for defective terminals or connections on ECM 22-pin connector B-56. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console.
  6. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and intake air temperature sensor on volume airflow sensor. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness.
  7. Check for defective terminals or connections on connector for volume airflow sensor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. If no trouble symptom exists, replace ECM.
