Description And Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 RAM ProMaster City. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

DESCRIPTION

The Fleet Telematics System is used to relay vehicle data to a Fleet Management System. The Fleet Telematics Module (FTM) is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna for location data and a Long Term Evolution (LTE) antenna for network data transmission.

The FTM captures and sends data every 30 seconds while also performing vehicle diagnostics. Based upon the appropriate Controller Area Network (CAN) configuration message, the FTM sends a diagnostic request to one Electronic Control Unit (ECU) at a time (three seconds per ECU). A warning will be sent to the Fleet Management System if a critical Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is present.

There are two types of warning triggers in the Fleet Telematics System, automatic and configured. Automatic warning triggers are for critical DTCs such as low engine oil pressure, low brake fluid, and impact events. Configured warning triggers provide the Fleet Management System the ability to set a threshold when a warning trigger will happen for harsh acceleration, harsh braking, vehicle speed, and reverse gear situations.

OPERATION

The FTM receives data from several modules via the Security Gateway (SGW) Module using the CAN bus. The SGW module communicates with the Body Control Module (BCM), Powertrain Control Module (PCM)/Engine Control Module (ECM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), Antilock Brake Module (ABM), Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), Radio Frequency Hub (RFH) Module and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to obtain the data that is transmitted to the Fleet Management System. The Global Positioning System (GPS) data is acquired via the GPS antenna and transmitted to the Fleet Management System as well.

Data snapshots are sent every 30 seconds to the end user is as follows:

  1. Data obtained by the FTM
  2. Transmitted to the AT&T Network
  3. Transferred to the Sprint server
  4. Simultaneously relayed to Telogis and FCA
  5. Supplied to the end user by Telogis

Power is supplied through the 20 amp inline radio fuse from the battery and the FTM has a dedicated ground to the instrument panel ground.
