Pinion Housing Assembly

- Using the Handle Driver (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2) and the Bearing Cup Installer (special tool #D-129, Installer, Bearing Cup) (1), press the NEW
pinion head bearing cup (3) in the pinion gear housing.
- Using the Driver Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) and Installer (special tool #D-130, Installer, Bearing Cup) (2), press the NEW
pinion tail bearing cup in the pinion gear housing.
- Using the Bearing Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing), install the NEW
pinion head bearing.
- Install the pinion bearing select spacer (1) removed upon disassembly. Spacer thickness will be measured/verified at end of assembly.
- Install the pinion gear/bearing assembly into pinion housing. Using the Bearing Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing) (1), and press the NEW
pinion tail bearing (2) on the shaft.
- Using the Seal Installer (special tool #9677, Installer, Seal) (1), install the NEW
pinion seal.
- Using the Bearing Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing) (1), install the pinion flange (2) until it bottoms.
- Using the Spanner Wrench (special tool #6958, Wrench, Spanner) (2), install pinion flange nut and torque to 475 N. m (350 ft. lbs.).
- Measure the pinion housing assembly rotating torque (1). Rotating torque should be within 1.3 - 2.6 N. m (12 - 23 in. lbs.).
- If rotating torque is lower than this range, disassemble pinion housing, measure and install a slightly thinner spacer (1), reassemble and reverify. If rotating torque is higher than this range, disassemble pinion housing, install a slightly thicker spacer, reassemble and reverify rotating torque.
- Select the pinion depth shim required for this axle assembly. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS .
