DTC P0461: Fuel Level Sensor #1 Performance: Testing

NOTE: If DTC P0462 or P0463 is also set with this DTC, diagnose those DTCs before continuing with this test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  and perform appropriate test(s).
NOTE: Inspect Fuel Pump Module Harness connector for any corrosion of damage.
  1. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT FAILURES  under ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS.
  2. Turn the ignition off. Visually inspect the Fuel Tank for damage that may restrict the Fuel Level Sensor float from moving. Is the Fuel Tank okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace the Fuel Tank as necessary. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article.
  3. Disconnect the Fuel Pump Module harness connector. Measure the resistance between ground and the Fuel Level Sensor Signal circuit in the Fuel Pump Module harness connector. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the Fuel Level Sensor Signal circuit. If no, go to next step.
  4. CAUTION: DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  5. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor Signal circuit from the Fuel Pump Module harness connector to the appropriate terminal of the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the Fuel Level Sensor Signal circuit.
  6. CAUTION: DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  7. Measure the resistance of the Sensor Ground circuit from the Fuel Pump Module harness connector to the appropriate terminal of the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the Sensor Ground circuit.
  8. WARNING: The fuel system is under a constant pressure (even with the engine off). Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting or line, the fuel system pressure must be released.
  9. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove the Fuel Pump Module. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Visually inspect the inside of the Fuel Tank for any obstructions or deformities. Inspect the Fuel Level Sensor Float arm for damage. Were any problems found? If yes, repair or replace as necessary. If no, go to next step.
  10. There are no possible causes remaining, replace the Fuel Level Sensor.
