No Response From PCM (SCI Only)
Possible Causes:
- Check PCM Power & Ground circuits.
- SCI Transmit circuit shorted to voltage.
- TCM.
- SCI Receive circuit short to voltage.
- SCI circuits shorted together.
- SCI Transmit circuit shorted to ground.
- SCI Receive circuit shorted to ground.
- SCI Receive circuit open.
- SCI Transmit circuit open.
- PCM.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition off before disconnecting or connecting any control module connector. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module.
NOTE:
Ensure vehicle being tested has a fully charged battery. If it does not, false symptoms may occur.

Testing:
- Turn ignition off. Connect DRBIII(R) to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using the DRBIII(R) in generic scan tool mode, attempt to communicate with the PCM. Is DRBIII(R) able to communicate with the PCM? If yes, go to next step. If no, ensure PCM Power and Ground circuits are okay. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - DAKOTA & DURANGO article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Did vehicle pass this test? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Power and/or Ground circuits as necessary. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM C1 harness connector (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector (JTEC). Disconnect DRBIII(R) from DLC. Measure resistance between ground and PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 36 (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector terminal No. 27 (JTEC). Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4 .
- Reconnect PCM C1 harness connector (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector (JTEC). Disconnect TCM harness connector (JTEC). Measure resistance between ground and TCM harness connector terminal No. 7. Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, repair SCI Transmit circuit for a short to ground. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, replace TCM. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Disconnect DRBIII(R) from DLC. Disconnect remaining PCM harness connectors. Disconnect TCM harness connector (if equipped). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on DLC terminals No. 7 and 15. Is the voltage more than one volt at either circuit? If yes, repair SCI Transmit circuit(s) for a short to voltage. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
- Reconnect TCM harness connector (if equipped). Measure voltage on DLC terminal No. 12. Is the voltage more than one volt? If yes, repair SCI Receive circuit for a short to voltage. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between PCM C1 harness connector terminals No. 24 and 36 (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector terminals No. 27 and 29 (JTEC). Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, repair SCI Receive circuit for short to SCI Transmit circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 25 (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector terminal No. 29 (JTEC). Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, repair SCI Receive circuit for a short to ground. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 12 and PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 25 (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector terminal No. 29 (JTEC). Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in SCI Receive circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 7 and PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 36 (NGC) or PCM C3 harness connector terminal No. 27 (JTEC). Is resistance less than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in SCI Transmit circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
- If there are no possible causes remaining, replace PCM. Perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE VERIFICATION TEST under VERIFICATION TESTS.
NOTE:
If vehicle is not equipped with a TCM (NGC), answer yes to the question in this step.
