Test NTC-2: Checking Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Calibration
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor value to indicate the engine coolant temperature. If engine coolant temperature is 180°F (82°C) or less, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82°C), allow engine to cool until engine coolant temperature is 150°F (66°C). Go to next step.
- Start engine. Using tool, monitor ECT sensor value while operating engine until engine is at normal operating temperature. If ECT sensor value indicates engine coolant temperature is at least 180°F (82°C) with engine at normal operating temperature, go to next step. If ECT sensor value does not indicate engine coolant temperature is at least 180°F (82°C) with engine at normal operating temperature, replace ECT sensor after inspecting cooling system for any problems. On DOHC, ECT sensor is screwed into cylinder head just below pressure cap at timing belt end of engine and contains a Violet/Yellow wire, Black/Red wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. See Fig 1. On SOHC, ECT sensor is screwed into end of cylinder head, just above the flywheel and contains a Violet/Yellow wire, Black/Light Blue wire and a Tan/Dark Blue wire in the connector. SeeFig 2. On all models, perform TEST VER-2A .

If ECT sensor value increased in a smooth transition, test is complete. If ECT sensor value does not increase in a smooth transition, replace ECT sensor after inspecting cooling system for any problems.
