DTC P1388: Auto Shutdown Relay Control Circuit

NOTE: For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay operation is monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is more than 10 volts. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if problem exists in ASD relay control circuit. Possible causes are: defective ASD relay circuit, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.
  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay. Listen for clicking sound at ASD relay. ASD relay is located in power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. See Fig 1. If clicking sound is heard at ASD relay, go to next step. If no clicking sound is heard at ASD relay, go to step  4.

  2. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors from ASD relay to the PCM. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. If engine does not stall while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, go to next step. If engine stalls while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary that caused engine to stall. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  3. Shut engine off. Inspect wiring and connectors between ASD relay and PCM. If no problems exist, test is complete. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove ASD relay from power distribution center. See Fig 1. Using voltmeter, check voltage at cavity "A" (B+ circuit Red wire) in power distribution center. See Fig 1.
  5. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open on (B+ circuit Red wire) to ASD relay. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  6. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 85 and 86 on ASD relay. See Fig 2. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 100 ohms or more, replace ASD relay. Perform TEST VER-2A .

  7. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connectors at PCM. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery.
  8. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between cavity "C" (Dark Blue/Yellow wire) for ASD relay in power distribution center and PCM connector terminal No. 67 (Dark Blue/Yellow wire). See Fig 1.
  9. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit on Dark Blue/Yellow wire between PCM and ASD relay. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  10. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and PCM connector terminal No. 67 (Dark Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair ASD relay control circuit for short to ground on Dark Blue/Yellow wire between PCM and ASD relay. Perform TEST VER-2A .
