On 3.0L, 2.5L fuel injected models with the SMEC system, the cruise control is controlled by the SMEC. The VSS is checked using a scan tool and code 15 diagnostics. On 2.2L feedback carb models, the VSS can be checked with an ohmmeter as follows:

1) Remove VSS from transaxle. connect ohmmeter between terminals of speed sensor connector. Slowly rotate the sensor.

2) Ohmmeter should show 8 pulses (on-off signals) for one complete turn of sensor. If not, replace sensor.
