Removal And Installation: Installation
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
- Carefully inspect the shaft lock module (1) interface area of the module, the steering shaft and the steering column housing (2) for damage or debris. Remove debris or replace damaged components that could hinder proper shaft lock module operation as required.
- Position the shaft lock module through the opening in the top of the steering column housing (2) and onto the steering column mount.
- Push the shaft lock module towards the upper end of the column housing far enough to align the mounting tab of the module with the steering column housing.
- Install the two Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) bolts (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the instrument panel wire harness connector to the shaft lock module.
- Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
A diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to initialize the new module before the vehicle can be operated. Program the module as described in the Module/Programming Order Replacement Guide. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
