Front Cover: Removal

- Open the hood.
- Remove the engine cover.
- Disconnect the remote battery ground.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Turn the engine to 40 degrees after Top Dead Center (1).
- Install the crankshaft locking tool.
- Remove the lower splash shield.
- Drain the coolant.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the lower bolt to the engine oil dipstick tube.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the grille (1).
- Remove the cooling module.
- Remove the PCM.
- Remove the engine harness.
- Remove the upper oil dipstick tube bolt.
- Remove the oil dipstick and oil dipstick tube.
- Remove the intake manifold.
- Remove the air pump (5).
- Remove the lower oil pan (1) bolts.
- Remove the lower oil pan.
- Remove the upper oil pan bolts.
- Remove the upper oil pan.
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the thermostat housing.
- Remove the thermostat gasket.
- Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly.
- Remove the oil filter/cooler housing (2).
- Remove the idler pulley (1).
- Remove the crankshaft damper bolt (4).
- Remove the crankshaft damper pulley (3).
- Remove the water pump pulley bolts (5).
- Remove the water pump pulley (6).
- Remove the water pump.
- Remove the water pump gasket.
- Remove the left front cylinder head cover (1).
- Remove the right side air control valve bolts.
- Remove the right side air control valve.
- Remove the right air control valve gasket.
- Remove the upper right front cylinder head cover (1).
- Remove the left air control valve.
- Remove the left air control valve gasket.
- Remove the left air control valve adapter.
- Remove the left air control valve adapter gasket.
- Remove and position aside the power steering pump.
- Remove and position aside the AC compressor.
- Remove the generator.
- Remove the left cylinder head cover (3).
- Remove the right cylinder head cover.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner.
- Install a drift into the camshaft to lock the split gears.
- Remove the timing chain guide (2, 3) roll pins from the right cylinder head.
- Remove the center valve bolts (1, 4 ) from the camshafts.
NOTE: The intake camshaft adjuster bolts are a L.H. thread. The exhaust camshaft bolts are a R.H thread.
- Remove the CMP plates.NOTE: Support the timing chain to prevent it from falling off the crankshaft or balance shaft.
- Remove the camshaft adjusters.
- Remove the cylinder head to front cover bolts (1) in the left cylinder head.
- Remove the cylinder head to front cover bolts (1) in the right cylinder head.
NOTE: The front cover bolts have several different sizes. Note the locations of each bolt.
- Remove the front cover bolts.
- Remove the front cover.
