DTC P0622: Generator Field Control Circuit: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on, engine not running. Record all DTC's and the related Freeze Frame data. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, backprobe the (K20) Generator Field Driver circuit in the back of the Generator. With the DRBIII(R), actuate the Generator Field Driver circuit. If the test light blinks, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  . Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  . If the test light does not blink, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: Carefully inspect all Connectors for corrosion or spread Terminals before continuing.
  3. Disconnect the Generator Field harness connector. Turn the ignition on. With the DRBIII(R) actuate the ASD Relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the (A142) ASD Relay Output circuit. If the test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If the test light does not illuminate brightly, repair the open in the (F142) Generator Field Source circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  .
  4. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connector. Disconnect the Generator Field harness connector. Measure the resistance of the (K20) Generator Field Driver circuit from PCM harness connector to ground. If the resistance is below 100 ohms, repair the short to ground in the (K20) Generator Field Driver circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  . If the resistance is not below 100 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connector. Disconnect the Generator Field harness connector. Measure the resistance of the (K20) Generator Field Driver circuit from the PCM harness connector to the Generator Field harness connector. If the resistance is below 5.0 ohms, go to next step. If the resistance is not below 5.0 ohms, repair the open in the (K20) Generator Field Driver circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  .
  6. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Generator Field harness connector. Measure the resistance across the Generator Field Terminals at the Generator. If the resistance is above 15.0 ohms, replace the Generator. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  . If the resistance is not above 15.0 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Generator Field harness connector. Measure the resistance across the Generator Field Terminals at the Generator. If the resistance is below 0.5 ohms, replace the Generator. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  . If the resistance is not below 0.5 ohms, go to next step.
  8. NOTE: Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.
  9. Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace and program the Powertrain Control Module. See PROGRAMMING  . Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-3  .
