Chime Inoperative With Exterior Lights On

  1. Ensure headlights and parking lights are functioning properly. If headlights or parking lights do not function properly, perform appropriate test under EXTERIOR LIGHTING  . If headlights and parking lights function properly, go to next step.
  2. Open driver's door. Using scan tool, read door ajar status. If scan tool displays DRDOOR AJAR SWITCH: CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DRDOOR AJAR SWITCH: CLOSED, go to OPEN DRIVER DOOR AJAR CIRCUIT OR COURTESY LIGHTS INOPERATIVE WITH DRIVER DOOR  under INTERIOR LIGHTING.
  3. Remove ignition key. Using scan tool, read key-in ignition switch status. If scan tool does not display KEY-IN IGNITION SW: OPEN, go to step  6 . If scan tool displays KEY-IN IGNITION SW: OPEN, go to next step.
  4. Open driver's door. Turn parking lights on. If chime does not sound, replace Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . If chime sounds, go to next step.
  5. Turn headlights on. If chime sounds, system is functioning properly at this time. Fault may be intermittent. If chime does not sound, replace BCM. BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure .
  6. Remove lower steering column cover. Disconnect key-in ignition switch Green connector from back of ignition switch. See Fig 1 . Using scan tool, read key-in ignition switch status. If scan tool displays KEY-IN IGNITION SW: CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display KEY-IN IGNITION SW: CLOSED, replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  7. Disconnect BCM connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, ensure all lights and accessories are off. Close all doors. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 32 (Light Blue wire) at BCM connector "A". See Figure . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire between BCM and ignition switch. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace BCM.
