Test NS-8: Qualifying A No Start Condition
NOTE:
For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Ensure no DTCs exist before proceeding with this test. Check that all Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors are securely installed on PCM. PCM is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, just below air cleaner assembly.
- Attempt to crank the engine. If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, perform TEST NS-7: NO CRANK CONDITION .
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in INPUT/OUTPUT display, monitor camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor signal state while cranking engine for at least 15 seconds. Camshaft position sensor may also be referred to as CMP sensor and crankshaft position sensor may be referred to as CKP sensor. If crankshaft position sensor signal state is present while cranking engine, go to next step. If crankshaft position sensor signal state is not present while cranking engine, go to DTC P0320: NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM .
- Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool in INPUT/OUTPUT display, monitor camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor signal state while cranking engine for at least 15 seconds again. If camshaft position sensor signal state is present while cranking engine, go to next step. If camshaft position sensor signal state is not present while cranking engine, go to DTC P0340: NO CAM SIGNAL AT PCM .
- Disconnect spark plug wire at cylinder No. 2. Cylinder No. 2 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from flywheel end of engine. Install spark tester on spark plug wire. Connect spark tester to good engine ground. Crank engine for 10 seconds while checking for spark. Consider 1-2 sparks as a no spark condition. If good spark does not exist, remove spark tester and reinstall spark plug wire. Go to next step. If good spark exists, perform TEST NS-3: CHECKING FUEL SYSTEM .
- Turn ignition off. Remove spark plug cap from distributor for access to ignition coil located inside the distributor. Install spark plug wire in high tension terminal on ignition coil. Install spark tester on spark plug wire. Connect spark tester to good engine ground. Crank engine for 10 seconds while checking for spark. Consider 1-2 sparks as a no spark condition. If good spark does not exist, remove spark tester and reinstall distributor cap. Go to next step. If good spark exists, replace distributor cap and rotor. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect distributor 2-pin connector for ignition coil from side of the distributor. Ignition coil is located inside distributor with a 2-pin connector on side of the distributor which contains only a Dark Green/Orange wire.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate ignition coil. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 1 (Dark Green/Orange wire) on distributor 2-pin connector for ignition coil. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open on Dark Green/Orange wire between Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay and ignition coil. ASD relay is located in power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near air cleaner assembly. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect distributor 6-pin connector from side of distributor. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (Black wire) on distributor 6-pin connector. This is the ground circuit for the distributor. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open on Black wire between distributor and ground connection. Ground connection is located on rear of cylinder head, near EGR valve. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Connect positive lead of analog voltmeter to 12-volt power source. Connect negative lead of voltmeter to No. 6 (Black/Gray wire) on distributor 6-pin connector. This is the ignition coil driver circuit. Turn ignition on with engine off. While monitoring voltage reading, use scan tool to actuate ignition coil. If voltage fluctuates, go to next step. If voltage does not fluctuate, go to step 12 .
- Check engine valve timing. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If engine valve timing is okay, replace ignition coil and distributor as an assembly. Perform TEST VER-1A . If engine valve timing is incorrect, repair engine as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, just below air cleaner assembly.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 6 (Black/Gray wire) on distributor 6-pin connector and terminal No. 4 (Black/Gray wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black/Gray wire between ignition coil and PCM. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Black/Gray wire) on distributor 6-pin connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1A . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Black/Gray wire between ignition coil and PCM. Perform TEST VER-1A .
CAUTION:
When checking for spark, ensure spark plug wire is NOT more than 1/4" from engine ground. If spark plug wire is more than 1/4" from engine ground, PCM may be damaged.
