DTC P0442-A: EVAP Leak Monitor Small Leak Detected
NOTE:
For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
CAUTION:
When performing test procedures keep all ignition sources away from test area. Ensure test area is well ventilated. Ensure fuel tank is at least 1/2 full before performing test. Pressurizing fuel tank with less than 3 gallons of fuel may result in an explosion caused by ignition of the fumes. Wear safety glasses when performing test procedures. If vehicle is not being tested on a hoist, ensure parking brake is applied and drive wheels are blocked before performing test procedures.
NOTE:
Evaporative System Pressure Pump (6872A) and Hose (6922) is necessary to perform this test.
NOTE:
Proportional purge solenoid is located next to air filter housing. Evaporative canister and Leak Detection Pump (LDP) are located next to fuel tank.
- Using scan tool, read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If scan tool display GLOBAL GOOD TRIP is equal to zero, go to step 4. If scan tool display GLOBAL GOOD TRIP is not equal to zero, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data. Ensure hex code matches DTC on scan tool. Hex code should be A0. If DTC matches hex code on scan tool, go to next step. If DTC does not match hex code on scan tool, repair DTC using FREEZE FRAME data. Perform TEST VER-6A: EVAP LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM .
- Read FREEZE FRAME data on scan tool. Try to duplicate conditions identified on scan tool. Pay particular attention to code set conditions: engine RPM, coolant temperature and engine load. Using scan tool, observe GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter changed to zero, operate vehicle for one good trip, then erase DTCs. Perform TEST VER-6A: EVAP LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM . If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, go to next step.
- A loose fuel cap could set this trouble code. Fuel tank must have at least 3 gallons of fuel to perform this procedure. Perform evaporative system pressure pump self test as identified on cover of Evaporative System Pressure Pump (6872A).
- Remove fuel tank filler cap. Connect Hose (6922) to filler cap opening on vehicle. Connect EVAP pressure pump supply hose to Hose (6922). Using a constant auxiliary vacuum supply (20 in. Hg) with scan tool in LDP SYSTEM TEST, press 3 to hold.
- Set PRESSURE/HOLD valve to open and set VENT valve to closed. Turn pump timer on. Observe gauge on Evaporative System Pressure Pump (6872A). When gauge reaches 14 in. of H2O vacuum, turn PRESSURE/HOLD valve to closed. Turn pump timer off. Note time and pressure.
- If pressure drops more than 8 in. of H2O vacuum within 2 minutes, go to next step. If pressure does not drop more than 8 in. of H2O vacuum within 2 minutes, go to DTC P0442-B: EVAP LEAK MONITOR SMALL LEAK DETECTED .
- To continue test, Ultrasonic Leak Detector (6904) is necessary. While scan tool is still in LDP SYSTEM TEST, set PRESSURE/HOLD valve to OPEN and set VENT to OPEN position. Turn pump timer on. Move Evaporative System Pressure Pump (6872A) away from vehicle to prevent operating noise from interfering with testing procedure.
- Using ultrasonic leak detector, start listening for leaks at fuel cap, fuel tank rollover valve, EVAP canister, LDP and proportional purge solenoid. If any leaks are heard with ultrasonic leak detector, repair or replace leaking component. Perform TEST VER-6A: EVAP LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM . If no leaks are heard with ultrasonic leak detector, replace LDP. Perform TEST VER-6A: EVAP LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM .
