Test NTC-6: Checking EVAP Emission System
NOTE:
Possible causes are: EVAP canister defective, vacuum line restriction or EVAP purge solenoid defective.
NOTE:
EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP solenoid or proportional purge solenoid.
- Turn ignition off. Carefully inspect all EVAP system vacuum hoses for proper routing and damage from EVAP solenoid to fuel tank. If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If vacuum hoses are not okay, repair vacuum hoses as necessary.
- Start engine and idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge vacuum hose at EVAP solenoid that goes to EVAP canister. Start engine. There should be no flow through EVAP solenoid for 1-2 minutes. If EVAP solenoid allows vacuum through within one minute, go to next step. If EVAP solenoid does not allow vacuum through within one minute, go to step 5 .
- Turn ignition off. Inspect line from EVAP solenoid to EVAP canister. If line is not damaged, go to next step. If line is damaged, repair or replace as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- Remove EVAP solenoid and tap ports against a clean, solid surface. If any foreign material fell out, test is complete. If foreign material did not fall out, replace EVAP solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II
.NOTE: DO NOT use more than 5 psi during next step.
- Disconnect purge vacuum hose at EVAP solenoid that goes to EVAP canister. Attempt to blow air through vacuum line that goes to EVAP canister. If vacuum line and canister allow air to pass, go to next step. If vacuum line or canister do not allow air to pass, go to step 7 .
- Ensure vacuum hose that goes from EVAP solenoid to EVAP canister is still disconnected at EVAP solenoid. Start engine. After 90 seconds, ensure vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP solenoid. If vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP solenoid after 90 seconds, test is complete. If no vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP solenoid after 90 seconds, replace EVAP solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- Disconnect vacuum hose at EVAP canister that goes to EVAP solenoid. Ensure vacuum hose that goes from EVAP solenoid to EVAP canister is still disconnected at EVAP solenoid. Apply light air pressure on vacuum hose. If air flows through vacuum hose, go to next step. If air does not flow through vacuum hose, repair or replace vacuum hose as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- If no other potential causes are remaining, PCM is assumed to be defective. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
