No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal (DTC 15)

WARNING:
Keep hands and feet clear of rotating wheels.
- Raise and support vehicle under lower control arms, allowing wheels to spin free. Start engine. Using scan tool, read vehicle speed sensor MPH value. Place transmission in a forward gear. If scan tool displays more than 0 MPH, go to next step. If scan tool does not display more than 0 MPH, go to step 3).
- At this time, condition required to set trouble code is not present. NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL trouble code sets when Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not see a speed signal on PCM terminal No. 66 for more than 11 seconds. Possible causes are: open or shorted VSS Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body), speedometer pinion factor not programmed, failed vehicle speed sensor, failed Powertrain Control Module (PCM), or failed Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Using scan tool, read transmission trouble codes. If any transmission trouble codes 50-58 are present, repair transmission as required. See the TRANSMISSION SERVICING article.
- If transmission trouble codes 50-58 are not present, turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Turn ignition on. Place scan tool in voltmeter mode. Using scan tool, check voltage at TCM connector terminal No. 58 Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body).
- If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to step 9). If voltage is less than 4 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Inspect PCM connector and repair as required. Perform TEST VER-2 . If PCM connector is okay, go to next step.
- If vehicle is equipped with speed proportional steering, go to TEST TC-9B. If vehicle is not equipped with speed proportional steering, using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body) between PCM connector terminal No. 66 and TCM connector terminal No. 58.
- If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, place scan tool in ohmmeter mode. Using scan tool, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 66 Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body).
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2.
- Using scan tool, read vehicle speed MPH value. Connect one end of a jumper wire to TCM connector terminal No. 58 Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body). While observing scan tool vehicle speed MPH display, tap other end of jumper wire to ground. If scan tool displays vehicle speed more than 0 MPH, replace TCM. Perform TEST VER-2. If scan tool displays vehicle speed of 0 MPH or less, turn ignition off.
- Disconnect PCM connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Yellow/White wire (FJ22 body) or White/Orange wire (JA body) between PCM connector terminal No. 66 and TCM connector terminal No. 58.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
