NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with AM/FM stereo (RAL) or AM/FM stereo w/ cassette (RAS) radios.

DISCUSSION

The radio will display either the last radio frequency or the current time, but all buttons and controls do not function and no sound will be heard.

This condition is caused by a programming error in the radio's microprocessor. There are two operational sequences that induce this condition and can be easily corrected in the service drive by a Service Advisor.

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE: The following procedure is for an RAS radio. For an RAL radio, go to Step 2.

With the ignition and radio on, insert a tape into the cassette player and check for proper operation. Eject the tape and check for proper operation. If the radio is still "locked-up", go to the next step.
With the radio on, cycle ignition off, then on. Check for proper operation. If the radio is still "locked-up", go to the next step.
With the radio off, disconnect the IOD (Ignition off Draw) connector and wait a minimum of 30 seconds. Reconnect the IOD. Turn the ignition on, then turn the radio on. Check for proper operation. If the radio is still "locked-up", replace the radio.

Revisions are being made to the microprocessor in the radio. Replacing the radio at this time will not permanently correct this condition. An updated TSB will be published providing information as to when the Service Center's will have revised parts.
