TEST 56A - Diagnosing Ambient Temperature Sensor System

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS at the end of this article. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1 after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. If vehicle is equipped with EVIC, go to TEST 56B. If vehicle is not equipped with EVIC and temperature display is more than 130°F (54°C), go to TEST 56C. If vehicle is not equipped with EVIC and temperature display is less than -30°F (-34°C), go to TEST 56D. If vehicle is not equipped with EVIC and temperature display is between 130°F to -30°F (54°C to -34°C), go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ambient temperature sensor connector, located on inside left front bumper. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using DRB-II, measure outside temperature sensor voltage. If voltage is less than 4 volts, replace compass/temperature module. If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step.
  3. Connect jumper wire across both ambient temperature sensor connector terminals. If voltage is more than one volt, replace compass/temperature module. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, replace ambient temperature sensor.
