TEST 50A - Repairing Faulty Fuel Level Problem

NOTE: For connector identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see appropriate chassis wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS Section. Perform VERIFICATION TEST 71A after each repair.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using DRB-II, measure fuel level sensor voltage. Disconnect fuel tank sending unit connector, located under vehicle near rear of car. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. If DRB-II displays more than 8 volts, go to step 4). If DRB-II displays less than 8 volts, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Put DRB-II in ohmmeter mode. Disconnect Black body controller connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Measure resistance at Black body controller connector terminal No. 18 (Dark Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Dark Blue wire between Black body controller connector and fuel tank sending unit connector for short to ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
    NOTE: Step 3) step is for electronic instrument cluster only.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Disconnect Natural body controller connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Put DRB-II in voltmeter mode. Measure voltage at Natural body controller connector terminal No. 18 (Dark Blue/White wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Blue/White wire between Natural body controller connector and splice. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace body controller.
  4. If DRB-II displays more than 8 volts in step 1), connect jumper wire between fuel tank sending unit connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Green wire) and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue wire). If DRB-II displays zero volts, replace fuel level sensor. If DRB-II displays more than zero volts, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect jumper wire. Gain access to body controller, located behind right kick panel. With connectors connected, connect jumper wire between Black body controller connector terminal No. 18 (Dark Blue wire) and ground. If DRB-II displays zero volts, repair open Dark Blue wire between Black body controller connector and fuel tank sending unit connector. If DRB-II displays more than zero volts, disconnect Black body controller connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. If connections are okay, replace body controller.
