TEST 17A - Repairing Temperature Gauge Problems
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagrams, see appropriate chassis wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS Section. Perform VERIFICATION TEST 71A after each repair.
- Ensure cooling system is operating properly. If cooling system is not operating properly, repair as needed. If cooling system is operating properly, go to next step.
- Using DRB-II, stop SEQUENTIAL SEGMENTS test. Using DRB-II, measure engine temperature sensor voltage. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 6). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Disconnect engine temperature switch connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Connect jumper wire between engine temperature sensor connector (Violet/Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace engine temperature sensor. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Gain access to body controller, located behind right kick panel. With connectors connected, connect jumper wire between Natural body controller connector Violet/Yellow wire and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Violet/Yellow wire between engine temperature sensor connector and body controller connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Disconnect Natural body controller connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. If connections are okay, replace body controller.
- If voltage in step 2) is less than 10 volts, disconnect engine temperature sensor connector and check and clean connections. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace engine temperature sensor. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Natural body controller connector. Check, clean and repair connections as needed. Put DRB-II in voltmeter mode. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage at Natural body controller connector terminal No. 6 (Dark Blue/White wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Blue/White wire between body controller connector and splice. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Put DRB-II in ohmmeter mode. Measure resistance of Violet/Yellow wire at coolant temperature connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace body controller. If voltage is less than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Yellow wire for short to ground. See appropriate wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS Section.
