Circuit/System Verification

NOTE:

This diagnostic assumes the following:

  • The battery is completely charged.
  • The engine cranking speed is acceptable.
  • There is adequate fuel in the fuel tank.
  1. Crank the engine for up to 15 seconds.
  2. Verify that DTC P0120, P0122, P0123, P0201 - P0208, P0220, P0222, P0223, P0300 - P0308, P0335, P0336, P0351 - P0358, P0562, P0563, P0601 - P0604, P0606, P0607, P060A, P060D, P062F, P0633, P0685, P0690, P1516, P1631, P1682, P2101, P2119, 2120, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128, P2135, P2138, P2176, P2610, or P262B is not set.
    • If none of the DTCs are set
  3. Ignition ON.
  4. Verify the security indicator on the instrument cluster illuminates momentarily
    • If security indicator does not stay ON and is not flashing
  5. Verify the scan tool Engine Speed parameter displays greater than 0 RPM while cranking the engine.
    • If greater than 0 RPM
  6. NOTE:
    • Perform the spark test on at least one cylinder of each cylinder bank.
    • An erratic or weak spark is considered a no spark condition.
  7. Ignition OFF, disconnect a spark plug wire from a spark plug.
  8. Connect a J 26792  HEI Spark Tester between the boot of the spark plug wire and ground.
  9. Verify that the spark tester sparks while cranking the engine.
    • If the spark tester sparks
  10. Ignition ON.
  11. NOTE:
    • The Fuel Pump Enable may need to be commanded On a few times in order to obtain the highest possible fuel pressure.
    • If the engine is too hot, high fuel pressure readings may result due to hot soak fuel boiling. Allow the engine to cool down until the engine coolant temperature is less than 60 °C (150 °F) before verifying fuel pressure.
  12. Command the Fuel Pump Enable On several times with a scan tool.
  13. Verify the Fuel Pressure Sensor parameter is between 345 - 690 kPa (50 - 100 psi) with the fuel pump running.
    • If within the specified range
  14. NOTE:

The fuel pressure may vary slightly when the fuel pump stops operating. After the fuel pump stops operating, the fuel pressure should stabilize and remain constant.

  15. Verify that the Fuel Pressure Sensor parameter, after the pump has turned OFF, stabilizes between 500 - 599 kPa (72 - 87 psi).
    • If within the specified range
  16. Verify that the Fuel Pressure Sensor parameter does not decrease greater than 34 kPa (5 psi) in 1 minute.
    • If within the specified range
  17. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of a fuel injector.
  18. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and the ignition voltage circuit of the harness connector.
  19. NOTE:

Perform the fuel injector test on at least 1 fuel injector from each engine cylinder bank.

  20. Verify the test lamp flashes while cranking the engine.
    • If the test lamp flashes
  21. Verify none of the conditions listed below exist:
    • If a condition exists

      Repair or replace as necessary.

    • If no conditions exist
  22. All OK.
