Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate Q6 camshaft position actuator solenoid valve.
  2. Ignition OFF, all vehicles systems OFF. It may take up to for 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 2 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    • If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  3. NOTE: A test lamp must be used for this test. The control circuit is pulled-up to a low current voltage. The current is too low to illuminate a test lamp. A voltage on the control circuit is normal.
  4. Service Mode active, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 2 and ground.
    • If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  5. Connect the DMM negative lead to the control circuit terminal 2. Connect the DMM positive lead to B+. Set the DMM on the diode setting. Command the CMP Actuator Solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from OL when commanded OFF to less than 1 V when commanded ON.
    • If the circuit voltage does not correspond to the specified values, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance or a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  6. Ignition OFF, swap the appropriate Q6 camshaft position actuator solenoid valve with a Q6 camshaft position actuator solenoid valve that is operating correctly.
  7. NOTE: This step tests the mechanical camshaft position actuator which is part of the intake and exhaust sprocket assembly.
  8. Engine idling, command the appropriate Camshaft Position Actuator from 0° to 20° and back to zero while observing the appropriate scan tool Intake/Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance parameters. The Intake/Exhaust Camshaft Position Variance should be less than 2° in each of the commanded states.
    • If greater than the specified value, replace the mechanical camshaft position actuator.
  9. If all circuits and components test normal, replace the Q6 camshaft position actuator solenoid valve.
