Circuit/System Testing

  1. Idle the engine at normal operating temperature. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0016 should not set.
    • If a DTC sets, inspect for the following:
    • The correct installation of the camshaft sensor
    • The correct installation of the crankshaft sensor
    • A camshaft or crankshaft sensor for damage.
    • Front engine cover damage.
    • Incorrectly installed timing gears
    • Excessive play in the timing gears
    • Excessive camshaft end play. Inspect the camshaft thrust plate.
    • Timing gears that jumped teeth.
    • A camshaft or crankshaft reluctor or exciter ring for damage.
      • If you find a condition, repair as necessary.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
