Circuit Description

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor works in conjunction with the 58X reluctor trigger wheel on the crankshaft. Each tooth on the reluctor wheel is spaced at 60 tooth spacing, with 2 missing teeth for the reference gap or sync pulse. The engine control module (ECM) provides a 5-volt reference to the sensor, as well as a low reference, and a signal circuit. As the crankshaft rotates, the reluctor trigger wheel interrupts a magnetic field produced by a magnet internal to the sensor. The CKP sensor internal circuitry detects this interruption of the magnetic field, and produces an ON/OFF DC voltage of varying frequency. The frequency of the CKP sensor output signal is dependent upon crankshaft speed. The ECM uses each CKP output signal to determine crankshaft speed, identify crankshaft position, and to detect engine misfire. If the ECM detects that there is no output signal from the CMP sensor, then DTC P0335 will set.
