Pass-Key(R) III System: Notes

NOTE: PASS-Key(R) III may also be referred as Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) system.

Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) system functions are provided by theft deterrent control module. VTD system prevents vehicle operation if a valid (learned) transponder PASS-Key(R) III ignition key is not used to start vehicle. Theft deterrent control module has an exciter that is part of ignition lock cylinder as an assembly. PASS-Key(R)III key has a transponder embedded in plastic head of ignition key. An exciter is an antenna which is made up of wire coils which surround ignition lock cylinder. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) enables engine starting when it receives a valid (learned) password from theft deterrent control module through class 2 serial data circuit. Components of vehicle theft deterrent system are as follows: theft deterrent control module, PCM, ignition key (transponder), ignition lock cylinder and SECURITY indicator.
