Manual Transmission Diagnostic System Check
NOTE:
DO NOT perform this diagnostic if no driveability condition exists, unless directed from another procedure. Search for applicable technical service bulletins before proceeding with diagnosis. DO NOT clear DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure. Ensure Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds are clean, tight, and in proper location. If a no start condition exists, diagnose no start condition. See appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure battery cables are clean and tight.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel right of steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, perform TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start, diagnose no start condition. See appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Select DTC INFORMATION on scan tool. If scan tool displays any PCM DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any PCM DTCs, go to step 7 .
- Using scan tool, record and store DTC information and go to next step.
- If scan tool displays DTC P1600 only, diagnose DTC P1600. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If scan tool displays DTCs other than P1600, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
- If concern is not related to Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing, go to next step. If concern is related to I/M testing, perform inspection/maintenance system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Diagnose manual transmission by symptom. See appropriate MANUAL TRANSMISSION TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If concern still exists, diagnose intermittent condition. See PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS under INTERMITTENTS.
