Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Start engine. With throttle closed, observe MAF sensor parameter on scan tool. If scan tool displays 1.1-2.9 L/sec, go to step 4. If scan tool does not display 1.1-2.9 L/sec, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, perform clear DTC information function. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions. Retrieve DTCs. If this DTC resets, go to next step. If this DTC does not reset, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 10 (MAF sensor signal circuit). If voltage reading is 1.0-1.6 volts, leave DVOM connected and go to next step. If voltage reading is not 1.0-1.6 volts, go to step 6.
- Start engine. Momentarily increase engine speed to 4000 RPM while observing DVOM. If voltage reading increases from 1.6 volts at idle to about 3 volts at 4000 RPM, go to step 10. If voltage reading does not increase from 1.6 volts at idle to about 3 volts at 4000 RPM, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor harness connector. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe MAF sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (ground circuit). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 8.
- Check for poor connections at MAF sensor and PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12. If connection is okay, step 9.
- Repair open in ground circuit to MAF sensor. After repairs, go to step 12.
- Check for a short in MAF sensor signal circuit between MAF sensor and PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12. If circuit is okay, go to step 11.
- Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to step 12.
- Replace MAF sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
- After repairs, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions that set DTC. Check for DTCs. If no DTCs are stored, repair is complete. If any DTCs are stored, diagnose DTC(s).
NOTE:
MAF sensor readings vary with air temperature and barometric pressure. Specifications are with temperature of 68°F (20°C) and pressure at sea level.
