Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Install scan tool. Start engine. With throttle closed, observe MAF sensor parameter on scan tool. If scan tool displays 1.1-2.9 L/sec, go to step  5. If scan tool does not display 1.1-2.9 L/sec, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions. If scan tool displays 5-9 L/sec at 2500 RPM, go to next step. If scan tool does not display 5-9 L/sec at 2500 RPM, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Check for objects blocking MAF sensor inlet screen. Check for intake manifold vacuum leaks, throttle body vacuum leaks or EGR valve leaks. Check for faulty, missing or incorrectly installed PCV valve. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM connected to ground, check voltage at MAF harness connector terminal No. 3 (ignition feed circuit). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  7.
  6. Turn ignition off. Reconnect MAF sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM, backprobe PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 10 (MAF sensor signal circuit). If voltage reading is 1.0-1.6 volts, go to step  10. If voltage reading is not 1.0-1.6 volts, go to step  8.
  7. Repair open or short in ignition feed circuit to MAF sensor. After repairs, go to step  11.
  8. Check for an open or short in MAF sensor signal circuit between PCM and MAF sensor. Check for poor connection at MAF sensor. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11. If circuit and connection are okay, go to next step.
  9. Replace MAF sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step  11.
  10. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  11. After repairs, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions that set DTC. Check for DTCs. If no DTCs are stored, repair is complete. If any DTCs are stored, diagnose DTC(s).
