Cruise Control System: Description

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - TRACKER article. Do not apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

This cruise control system has the capability to cruise, coast, resume speed and accelerate. Cruise control system will generally maintain desired vehicle speed, with some variations caused by steep grades up or down.

Main cruise control system components are cruise control servo, cruise control main switch, cruise control mode switch (combination switch), cruise control indicator, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), main relay and cancel switches. Cruise control mode switch (combination switch) incorporates cruise control and wiper/washer operation on one lever, located on right side of steering column. Cancel switches are used to disengage cruise operation.

PCM provides a throttle position sensor signal to cruise control servo. Cruise control servo uses this signal as one of the factors in determining when to provide an overdrive cut-off signal to PCM.
