Code 36 - 24X Signal Error (3.4L "F" Body): Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1993 Pontiac Firebird, 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1993 Chevrolet Lumina, and 1993 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The 24X crankshaft position sensor is used to improve spark during cranking and engine speeds up to 2000 RPM. Code 36 will set if the engine is running and the ECM detects 6 or more 24X crankshaft sensor reference pulses have not occurred. Code 36 diagnosis occurs once per ignition cycle.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. The 24X signal RPM should be the same as engine speed up to 2000 RPM, at which time it stops. This test determines if the ECM is putting out a 24X signal.
  2. If circuit No. 1800 is shorted to voltage, this could also lead to a faulty sensor.
  3. If circuit No. 632 is shorted to voltage, this will set both Code 17 and Code 36.
