Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Q6 Camshaft Position Actuator. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal E and ground.
    • If 5 Ω or greater 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module.
    2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
    • If less than 5 Ω 
  3. NOTE:

    A test lamp must be used for this test. The control circuit is pulled-up to a low current voltage, A voltage on the control circuit is normal.

  4. Ignition ON, engine OFF, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal D and ground.
    • If the test lamp illuminates 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module, ignition ON.
    2. Test for less than 1 V between the control circuit and ground.
    • If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
    • If less than 1 V, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate 
  5. Remove the test lamp.
  6. Connect the DMM black lead to the control circuit terminal D. Connect the DMM red lead to B+. Set the DMM on the diode setting. Command the CMP actuator solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from a higher voltage when commanded OFF to less than 1 V when commanded ON.
    • If the parameter does not correspond to the specified values 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module.
    2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the control circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance or short to ground in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
    • If the parameter corresponds to the specified values 
  7. Remove the CMP actuator magnet. Perform the Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Cleaning and Inspection . The CMP actuator magnet should pass the inspection.
    • If the inspection does not pass 

      Replace the camshaft position actuator magnet

    • If the inspection does pass 
  8. Perform the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Inspection (Off-Vehicle) , Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Inspection (On-Vehicle) . The CMP Actuator Solenoid Valve should pass the inspection.
    • If the inspection does not pass 

      Replace the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve

    • If the inspection does pass 
  9. If all circuits and components test normal, test replace the mechanical camshaft position actuator.
