Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2008 GMC Yukon XL, 2008 GMC Yukon, 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2008 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
    4. NOTE: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Notice .
  4. Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement .
  5. If equipped with a diesel engine, remove the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side .
  6. Disconnect the steering hoses from the steering gear.
  7. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement .

    IMPORTANT: Discard the pitman arm nut.
  8. Remove the pitman arm nut (1).

  9. Separate the pitman arm from the relay rod using puller J 24319-B  . See Special Tools .

  10. Remove the steering gear bolts (1).
  11. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  12. Transfer the pitman arm as necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement .
