Installation Procedure

  1. Install the rack and pinion boot (2).
  2. Install a NEW rack and pinion boot inner clamp (1).
  3. Using the J 22610  crimp the rack and pinion boot clamp. See Special Tools .

  4. Install the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.

  5. Install the jam nut to the inner tie rod.

  6. Position the power steering gear.
    7. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  7. Install the power steering gear bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).

  8. Install the outer tie rod. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

  9. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  10. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  11. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  12. Remove the J 42640  from the steering column.
  13. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
