Code 46: Power Steering Pressure Switch (3.8L): Notes

The power steering pressure switch is normally open. Turning the steering wheel will increase pressure and close the switch, pulling voltage on the switch circuit low. Code 46 will set when power steering circuit voltage is low (indicating high pressure) and vehicle speed is greater than 40 MPH. Both of these conditions must be met for more than 25 seconds.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic charts.
  1. Different makes of "Scan" tester will display this information differently. Refer to the manufacturer's operating manual for additional information.
  2. This step determines if the fault is in the switch or circuit.
  3. If the display switches when circuit No. 495 is grounded, the fault is an open circuit No. 450.
